Hi Chet, our electric can openers keep breaking. What do you recommend?

Hi Lani, we've compared a number of electric can openers to find the best, and it was quite hard. Even when searching the internet for can opener reviews, you'll find out poor workmanship and a number of cost-cutting measures by most of the major manufacturers over the years have created a number of products that don't hold up, or are bad for those with arthritis.

We tested traditional-designed under the counter can openers like the Cuisinart and Hamilton Beach can opener, but there's also a few new companies trying to make their name, so we tested those as well.

We have 2 winners, both have different pros and cons:

The Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener is a side-cutting can opener that works extremely well and can last quite a while. A few customers have mentioned issues with shards of metal being cut and falling into the food - so be careful to make sure the opener only runs one rotation, otherwise you could experience issues similar to this. The other complaint is the length of the electric cord. It's too short at only several inches long.

As an alternative, I tried a few battery powered can openers that do not rotate the can, the move around the can themselves! I think the best electric can opener is the KitchenPalz Smooth Edge Automatic Electric Can Opener. It's small and cordless. This is another side-cutting one touch can opener that works well with all sized cans (even large size 10 cans). It comes with a free e-book, and customer support is 100%. This company will send you a new one if you have any experience with your item being defective. The only con is the battery drain. If you open a LOT of cans, this will probably end up being a $20 yearly battery investment.

KitchenPalz Smooth Edge Automatic Electric Can Opener - Compact & Cordless (Black) with FREE eBook

Both seem to be fine for use for anyone needing a can opener that can easily be operated due to arthritis issues.
